"At Savuti in Botswana, I can get closer on fOot to my jumbo friends than anywhere else in Africa.In the dry season, they hang around the waterhole, the only one for miles, all day and I think they know me by now. I was asked by South African television to talk about the work of the conservation foundation. I was talking direct to the camera with no vehicle to run to if I had to, but I found it incredibly difficult to concentrate with a bull elephant just a few yards behind me. I had no need to worry however. I asked the cameraman. "What's it doing?" He answered, "Carry on, David. He's just opened one eye and shut it again."
