In Africa, they were known as elephant birds, hippopotamus egrets and rhinoceros egrets,
because they would follow the large animals to feed on insects and small animals that the large animals stirred up in their grazing and travels.
They watch closely for any insect or small animal that cattle kick up as they graze.
